I was born and brought up in Holdhurst Farm, at the Eastern end of the main
runway. In 1961 my mother used to call the base commander and say “I don’t
know the name of the pilot who just flew his Harrier past my baby son’s
bedroom window, but he had blue eyes, so could you ask him to wait until nap
time is over? ” I remember lots of visits to the aerodrome, as local
residents, and the wonder of the VTOL programme. I wholeheartedly support
the Conservation of this historic and unique site, to preserve the history,
heritage and extraordinary community feeling for this national asset.
